It’s amazing how changing the presentation can change perceptions, isn’t it? Underneath the pocket-sized SUV garb of the Kicks is a Nissan Versa Note… or at least the same platform used for the now-defunct subcompact hatchback. Nissan, like other manufacturers, found a clever way to sell a subcompact for a little more money.

It’s also the only vehicle on our 2022 list with two, not three, pedals, as all the other models on this short list have to be equipped with a manual transmission to make it on to our affordable-car Top 10 ranking.

Winner: Nissan Kicks

The Nissan Kicks is our Best Buy for 2022, replacing the Kia Soul. It boasts generous space, a large cargo area and a very low entry price, making it a convenient choice for drivers in search of a cheap and versatile new vehicle.

Ride quality, noise insulation and overall performance are further reasons why the team at The Car Guide gave the award to the Kicks this year.

The Mazda CX-3 once again lands in second place. Now overshadowed by the roomier and sexier CX-30, Mazda’s smallest crossover has been downgraded to the minor leagues, so to speak. Still, it stands out from competitors with available all-wheel drive.

Sharp steering makes the CX-3 fun to drive, but it doesn’t make up for the lack of interior space. While singles and couples will be mostly satisfied, parents with kids should consider something else.

Finally, the Kia Soul fell to third place this year because of a few reliability issues, mainly in the powertrain department (gasoline models only). Beyond that, we like it quite a bit, and value is a big reason why.

Performance is decent with the base 147-horsepower engine, but the kicker is the fully electric Soul EV delivering 291 pound-feet of torque and either 248 or 383 kilometres of range depending on the battery.

But here’s to looking forward! Make way for the most affordable new vehicles available in Canada in 2022. Note that there may be a few 2021 editions of models on our Top 10 list still in stock at some dealerships, which may represent good bargains in their own right.

As we hit the ninth spot on our most-affordable ride list, we dive under the 20-grand mark – well OK, dip our toes beneath it, more like – and find a compact sedan that managed to surprise us when we test drove it earlier in the year.

Here, the manual transmission is required equipment if you want to take advantage of the sub-$20,000 price point. Get used to it, that’s the format from here on in.

It’s doesn’t cease to amaze us that a compact sedan as well put together as the Sentra is more affordable than a Nissan Versa Note disguised as an SUV (the Kicks). With the exception of the more practical hatchback format of the Kicks, the Sentra really has no reason to envy the little crossover.
