While the used car market is littered with five- and seven-seaters, six-seater cars are few and far between. Fear not, because we have plenty of options to get your teeth into that provide more than enough seats for your family. Yes, they might have more than six seats, but when was an extra seat ever a bad thing?Search used seven-seater dealsGet started with car finance

When buying a seven-seater, you have the choice of an MPV (also known as a people carrier) or an SUV. These make a lot of sense for a family of six as the extra seat can be used for storage, a backup for an unexpected extra passenger or, in some cases, it could even be removed entirely to increase luggage space.

We’ve put together a list of the best cars for a family of six below

Best cars for a family of six

  • Toyota Prius+
  • Kia Sorento
  • Ford Galaxy
  • Volkswagen Sharan
  • BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer
  • Renault Grand Scenic
  • Peugeot 5008
  • BMW X7

1. Toyota Prius+

Used deals from £25,999
Monthly finance from £345*

We start with one of the most overlooked seven-seat MPVs you can buy. As the name suggests, the Toyota Prius+ is based on the Prius hybrid. It is also one of only a handful of 7-seater cars that uses self-charging hybrid technology, meaning it is kinder to the environment and should make for some welcome savings on fuel costs.

Space in the second row is excellent, and while the seats in the third row are best reserved for children, it’s possible to slide the middle row forward to provide a little more legroom. There are two ways to create a six-seat version of the Prius+. One is to fold the middle seat to create a large armrest. The other is to fold one of the seats in the third row to create a larger boot.

Toyota facelifted the Prius+ in 2015, tweaking the styling, upgrading the interior and improving the specification. All versions come with a long list of standard kit, including alloy wheels, automatic air-conditioning, the Toyota ‘Touch2’ media system which includes a reversing camera, and a suite of safety systems.

2. Kia Sorento

Used deals from £19,058
Monthly finance from £350*

The Kia Sorento has developed over time into a very smart-looking SUV that could even fool some people into thinking it’s a much more expensive car. The price tag, however, is actually far more in line with more mainstream rivals. It also comes with a 100,000-mile seven-year warranty from new, so the very latest examples will still have plenty of cover. The latest Sorento was launched in 2020, so there’s never been a better time to bag a great deal on the previous model.

Like so many seven-seat SUVs, space in the third row is best reserved for children, but the Sorento is noticeably more spacious than the Land Rover Discovery Sport. In five-seat mode, there’s more luggage space than you’ll find in a Discovery Sport or Volvo XC60, too, making it a great choice whether you need to use all the seats or not.

Although the entry-level KX-1 is very well-equipped, we’d recommend the KX-2 model, as this features the likes of 18-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, self-levelling suspension, an eight-inch media system with sat-nav, automatic air-conditioning and a reversing camera.

3. Ford Galaxy

Used deals from £18,850
Monthly finance from £334*

The Ford Galaxy is one of the more traditional-style people carriers on the market. Because of this, it offers seating for seven adults, so it’s ideal if your children just won’t stop growing. You even get a relatively large boot when all seven seats are in use, with the kind of luggage capacity you’d expect to find in a small hatchback.

Even the ‘basic’ Zetec trim features the likes of 17-inch alloy wheels, an eight-inch touchscreen media system, front and rear parking sensors, automatic air-conditioning, three Isofix points for safely fitting child seats and cruise control. There’s no need to upgrade to the Titanium trim unless you want a more luxurious feel and are willing to pay a little extra.

As the Galaxy is based on a Ford Mondeo, it’s satisfying to drive – particularly for a car of this size. The smaller S-Max seven-seater remains the better choice for keen drivers, but for comfort on long journeys and confidence on a country road – plus a little extra interior space – the Ford Galaxy is hard to beat.

4. Volkswagen Sharan

Used deals from £15,194
Monthly finance from £279*

The Volkswagen Sharan is similar to the Ford Galaxy in the respect that it is an MPV with seating for seven adults. However, there’s a noticeable upshift in quality, while the Volkswagen badge adds a touch of class to the school run.

A pair of sliding doors provide access to the rear seats, where you’ll find three individual rear chairs with Isofix attachments for child seats. The middle seats recline and slide for maximum versatility, then tilt forward to enable you to climb into the third row.

The Sharan dates back to 2010, but we’d recommend one registered after 2015, when Volkswagen updated this people carrier. Although the entry-level S trim is well-equipped, SE and SEL models offer the kind of kit that will make the Sharan easier to live with over a long period, so it’s worth paying a little more for one of these.

5. BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer

Used deals from £15,500
Monthly finance from £258*

The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is longer and taller than the five-seater 2 Series Active Tourer people carrier. This means it’s spacious enough to carry seven people, although adults may not be too delighted if you stick them in the back row. It’s also a bit of faff to raise the rearmost seats, not to mention clamber into the back.

Although you’ll pay a small premium for the BMW badge, it’s worth it for the quality interior and the substantial level of standard kit. Automatic air-conditioning, sat-nav, an electric tailgate, rear parking sensors and a digital radio are standard across the range.

M Sport is the most popular trim on the BuyaCar website. This features the likes of ambient lighting, sport seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seats with contrast stitching and an M Sport multifunction leather steering wheel. The 2 Series Gran Tourer is two-wheel drive as standard, but ‘xDrive’ four-wheel drive is available if you’re after some all-weather security.

6. Renault Grand Scenic

Used deals from £14,500
Monthly finance from £241*

The Renault Grand Scenic is a successful marriage of SUV styling and people carrier practicality. Amazingly, all versions come with supersized 20-inch alloy wheels as standard, helping to make this one of the best-looking practical cars you can buy. Don’t expect the cheapest tyres when it comes time to replace them, though…

As with many seven-seaters, the third row is best reserved for children, but it’s possible to slide the middle row forward to provide some extra legroom. You can also get a clever sliding centre console, which comprises two USB ports, an armrest, storage bin and a 12-volt power socket.

Although the entry-level Play packs a decent level of equipment, we’d recommend going for an Iconic version. This features the likes of front and rear parking sensors, an upgraded sound system and, perhaps crucially in a family car, extra USB ports in the back.

7. Peugeot 5008

Used deals from £21,240
Monthly finance from £307*

Launched in 2017, the current Peugeot 5008 is one of the most stylish seven-seat SUVs you can buy. Bold exterior styling, a striking interior and a high-tech dashboard are just three of the highlights of this distinctive SUV.

Not that you’ll pay a premium for this ‘premium’ SUV. Cash prices start at around the £25,000 mark for a four-year-old example with less than 40,000 miles, so the Peugeot 5008 is a car you can purchase with your head and your heart. Even more so if you take advantage of low monthly payments with PCP finance.

There are a wide range of engines and trim levels to choose from, including a plush GT Premium version featuring the likes of a driver’s seat with massage function, an electric tailgate, black diamond-cut alloy wheels and a Focal high-end audio system.

8. BMW X7

Used deals from £75,978
Monthly finance from £1,075*

We promised a wildcard, and here it is. Officially, the BMW X7 is a seven-seat SUV, but an optional six-seat configuration includes two ‘captain-style’ seats in the second row. You can even opt for a five-zone climate control system, allowing individual climate control settings for front, left and right rear-seat passengers, plus those in the third row.

As the name suggests, the X7 is essentially an SUV version of the BMW 7 Series saloon, which means you can expect the ultimate in terms of comfort, technology and quality. This thing is more spacious and luxurious than some boutique hotel rooms.

It’ll be a while before the BMW X7 can be classed as anything approaching affordable. In the meantime, check out the search function on the BuyaCar website, where you can find a great selection of six-, seven-, eight- and nine-seaters that are perfect for a family of six, depending upon just how much room you need.
