Tesla borked production of its new Model X, Musk says

Tesla’s rollout of the revamped Model X hasn’t been what anyone would call smooth. This argument has been borne out on Twitter, and on Wednesday, CEO Elon Musk admitted the company’s culpability in that situation, beyond the typical COVID supply chain woes.

Musk’s statement comes in response to a Model X customer who has been waiting on a car for over a year. That customer, Sawyer Merritt, specifically states, “Here’s a criticism, the refreshed Model X rollout has been horrible & the lack of communication to customers who have been waiting for a year or more for their car & keep receiving delays is disappointing.”

To which Musk replied: “We dropped the ball badly regarding new Model X production ramp & still haven’t fully recovered. Was idiotic to stop production of old X in Dec 2020 when there was still plenty of demand!”

Tesla does not operate a public relations department to respond to requests for comment.

Tesla recalls nearly 27,000 EVs over defrosting problem

Tesla’s third recall in recent weeks involves the Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X electric vehicles. An OTA update should fix it.

Tesla is recalling 26,681 of its Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X electric vehicles due to windshields that may not defrost quickly enough. The condition, which affects select cars of the company’s 2021 and 2022 model-year EVs, can result in diminished visibility, increasing the likelihood of a crash. 

According to documents posted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall website, the issue stems from a software error that can open a heat-pump valve unintentionally. This condition can “trap the refrigerant inside the evaporator, resulting in decreased defrosting performance.” That means the affected Tesla vehicles might not match the minimum performance requirement outlined in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard rules. Those same documents say that operators of affected vehicles will be made aware of the issue when their vehicles alert them “to the cabin heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (‘HVAC’) system’s performance being limited or unavailable.”

The problem began to surface in December of 2021, when customers complained of “loss of heating performance in extreme cold weather conditions.” Some of these reports were chronicled on social media. On Feb. 15, the automaker’s CEO, Elon Musk, replied to a popular Canadian brand fan Twitter account, Drive Tesla, acknowledging the fault by saying, “Fixing this [problem] is a high priority.” Tesla owners from other cold-weather countries including Sweden and Norway have also taken to social media to report the issue.

Tesla developed the heat pump for 2020 model-year vehicles after owners of older models complained of poor cold-weather performance. In March of 2020, Musk tweeted, “Model Y heat pump is some of the best engineering I’ve seen in a while. Team did next-level work.”

Tesla is unaware of any crashes, injuries or fatalities related to the defogging problem.

This is the third Tesla safety recall announced in recent weeks, including a Feb. 1 recall of nearly 820,000 models over a seat-belt chime malfunction and 54,000 units due to Full Self-Driving software that allowed vehicles to execute illegal rolling stops.

Remember when we told you last month that Tesla’s latest software update to its Full Self-Driving tech might result in vehicles that intentionally — and illegally — run stop signs? It appears the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration took issue with the electric car company’s new “Assertive” mode’s capabilities. On Tuesday, the government safety agency posted a notice detailing the recall of 53,822 Model SModel XModel 3 and Model Y vehicles due to the issue.

The new setting for Tesla’s still-in-beta driver-assist technology specifically calls out that vehicles with the mode activated “… will have a smaller follow distance, perform more frequent speed lane changes, will not exit passing lanes and may perform rolling stops.”

That last bit — a deliberate decision by Tesla programmers to allow vehicles to slow-roll through stops — is what is triggering the recall of these 2016-2022 Model S and Model X EVs, as well as 2017-2022 Model 3 and 2020-2022 Model Y vehicles. 

According to related NHTSA documents, the uncorrected software “allows the vehicle to travel through all-way-stop intersections at up to 5.6 mph before coming to a complete stop, if certain conditions are first met.” Those conditions include an absence of “relevant” moving cars, pedestrians or bicyclists detected near the intersection, and all entering roads must have speed limits of 30 mph or less. It’s not clear how often this version of FSD engages in dangerous or illegal driving behavior. 

Tesla EVs with the firmware release 2020.40.10 or newer that include the FSD Beta are affected by this recall campaign.

The update enabling Assertive mode was released on Oct. 20, 2021, and NHTSA and Tesla met to “discuss the functionality” on Jan. 10 and 19, 2022. On Jan. 20, “a recall determination was voluntarily made to disable the functionality, beginning with firmware release 2021.44.30.15 and newer releases.”

The good news is the rolling-stop functionality should be disabled as easily as it was added — via over-the-air update, free of charge. No visit to a Tesla authorized service center should be necessary.

As of Jan. 27, Tesla says it is unaware of any crashes, injuries or fatalities related to this issue. Tesla does not operate a public relations team and did not respond to Roadshow’s request for comment for this story.

Tesla is recalling over 575,000 EVs over its Boombox function, which may obscure federally mandated Pedestrian Warning System sounds. 

According to a new National Highway Traffic Safety Administration filing, the electric car manufacturer’s feature, which enables vehicle occupants to play preset or custom sounds through an externally mounted speaker, can make it hard to hear the audible tone that all EVs are legally required to emit while in motion. These PWS sound signatures are designed to ensure pedestrians and cyclists can hear electric vehicles, which typically make far less noise than their internal-combustion counterparts when in motion.

According to documents related to the NHTSA recall, Tesla’s Boombox function violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 141, which established operating requirements for pedestrian alert noises for EVs and hybrids. The regulation “…prohibits manufacturers from altering or modifying the sound emitting capability of the pedestrian warning system (‘PWS’), through which the pedestrian alert sounds emit.” The same filing acknowledges that “Boombox can enhance the conspicuity of the vehicle to pedestrians” (e.g. when the driver calls out to a passer-by directly), but notes that the way Boombox operates is still noncompliant with the law.

Tesla is unaware of any crashes, injuries or fatalities stemming from this function.

Tesla introduced this Boombox feature in December of 2020 as part of an annual holiday update, but according to documents related to the recall campaign, NHTSA didn’t inquire with the automaker about the technology for over a full year. Washington authorities first issued an information request on Jan. 15, 2021. On Jan. 29, after further communications and investigation, Tesla agreed to voluntarily disable Boombox when its vehicles are not in Park mode.

This is the fourth recall for Tesla in recent weeks involving the company’s entire line of current production vehicles. The electric car company has come under increasing federal scrutiny for its business practices and vehicles, particularly around its controversially named partially automated driver-assist technology, Full Self Driving.

Like the previous recalls for a heat pump problem, a seat belt chime and Full Self Driving’s illegal rolling-stop programming, this Boombox recall fix is being administered through a free Over The Air update. While owners of affected vehicles are not expected to be notified of this recall campaign until an April 1 mailer, the OTA update has already been rolling out wirelessly. The free repair is not expected to require owners bring in their vehicle for service.

Tesla is recalling select examples of all four of its current model lines due to a potential seat belt chime malfunction. The second recall for the electric car company in as many days, this new campaign covers 817,143 Model 3Model SModel X and Model Y EVs.

According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announcement on Thursday, a warning chime may not sound when a vehicle is started and the driver has not buckled their safety belt. That means those vehicles fail to adhere to federal vehicle safety standards for occupant crash protection. NHTSA says that without a functioning chime, drivers may not know they are unbuckled, which increases the risk of injury or death in a crash. Tesla says it is unaware of any crashes or injuries related to the issue.
